Week-End Review: Five (Links) for Friday, and introducing the Friday Foto!

Posted on 05:00 by Guy

It's about time we got a button in here, isn't it?
I got myself a Tumblr blog after all, and if you’re on Tumblr, I’d be more than happy for you to follow it (and I'll follow you back)! But here are a few reasons you might choose not to:
  • I’m treating it as a “spinoff” from this blog, so a lot of what I post there will probably end up back over here anyway.
  • I’ve linked to its feed in my sidebar, so you can check out individual posts through that if you like.
  • One of the things I decided to use it for is collecting and annotating links for Week-end Review and Sunday Salon posts, so there are some days when I update a lot, and you might not want to see that much activity.
I’m also using it to post short, random thoughts and observations that are mostly “in the moment” - sort of like longer-form tweets, since I don’t have to condense them to 140 characters. Occasionally one of those might be the seed of a full-size post here, but I’m not sure that will happen all that often.

Basically, the 3 r’s, lowercase is a notebook, and I’m happy to share it with you if you’re interested - and you can ask me random questions there, too!

And now, Five (Links) for Friday (check out the tumblelog for more):
The whole concept of the “honey-do list” irritates me. My husband can make his own to-do list, thanks - I’m sure he doesn’t need one from me, and I have enough to do to keep up with my own!

I love lovely writing. I’ve been known to catch my breath and nod over a particularly well-crafted passage. But it still has to tell me something. “Bore-geous (adj.): beautiful writing that leads nowhere.” Thank you, Ayelet Waldman, for coining this. (BTW, neither she nor her husband Michael Chabon is guilty of this.)

Is it really the most wonderful time of the year? Could you be happier if you stop trying to be happy?

Done with your holiday shopping yet? Because “it’s the thought that counts” really means “I put some thought into choosing this gift for you,” NOT “I thought about getting you a gift,” here’s a practical guide to book-buying. (Don’t even think about telling me you’re not giving books!) And for the less practical: the Zombies vs. Unicorns Gift Guide!
************************
Now that I’m done with November’s NaBloPoMo, I’ll return to taking (most) Saturdays off from posting, but I liked doing those "(Nearly) Wordless Weekend" picture posts. Therefore, today I’m introducing a new feature: the Friday Foto. Some weeks I’ll include it in the Week-End Review, and sometimes it will appear on its own.

Here's our Christmas corner! The tree doesn't look quite as much like it was decorated by drunk monkeys as last year's did, but that topper's still a bit tipsy.

How's your holiday prep going? Did you have time to read any great posts this week?
