Tuesday Tangents: "Working for the Weekend(s)" edition

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
I considered taking today off, actually. I haven't had much time to write during the past few days - we were out of town for Easter weekend, and things have just been busy. Still, "Tangents" exist for those random things that don't justify writing a full post of their own, especially on Tuesdays - but just so you know, I may be skipping some days posting here and there during the next few weeks, because of the proverbial Other Stuff.

I've been getting some decent reading in lately, and I'm really looking forward to this weekend's 24-Hour Read-a-thon! I don't intend to push for 24 hours of reading; last October,
I think I managed between 12 and 14 hours, and I think that's a reasonable goal this time too. I've also signed up as a Read-a-thon cheerleader this time - only for one hour, but that will give me a break from the books and count as participation time!

At this point, I'm not setting aside any particular books for the Read-a-thon. Many participants choose short, lighter books to keep from getting bogged down and sleepy as they push through the hours, and I may pull out a couple of those as Saturday gets closer, but right now I'm leaning toward just continuing on with my current reading in progress. I'll post a couple of updates over the weekend, and with luck I'll get at least one new review out of it, but I'm not going to stress over quantity.

One reason I'm not planning to stick out the whole 24 hours is that, weather permitting, Tall Paul and I are planning to head over to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl Flea Market on Sunday morning, and that means an early start to the day. It's been a few years since we've been to one, and we may find some interesting treasures. Or not. It's more fun when you're not looking for anything in particular, really.

Actually, books and Pasadena look like the themes for the upcoming weekend, and we'll combine them both on Friday night. I get to bring my husband to his first author event (not counting the Festival of Books) - and it seems appropriate, since I did introduce him to the author in question. The first book I ever loaned Tall Paul, early in our relationship, was Christopher Moore's Lamb; this Friday night, he'll be discussing his latest novel, Bite Me (a sequel to You Suck, which is a sequel to Bloodsucking Fiends - Moore is no newbie to vampire fiction) at Vroman's Bookstore. In addition to the new book, Tall Paul is planning to bring his special edition of Lamb with him - the leather-bound one that looks like a Bible - in hopes of getting that signed by the author too. I'll report back on the event next week, but it will probably be a while before you see the new book reviewed here, and not just because my husband will most likely be reading it first! Maybe he'll even start it this weekend, even though he's not doing the Read-a-thon! (But probably not.)

We went to my mother-in-law's place near Oceanside (north of San Diego) for Easter weekend, and basically didn't do anything much different than we would have at home. We went to the movies on Saturday and saw How to Train Your Dragon again, but in 3D this time; I'm not sure it added that much to the experience for me, but the movie's still excellent. On
Sunday, we went bowling down near the beach:

I broke 50 in my first game and 75 in my second. I'm not much of a bowler - that second game was a good one for me. I'm not consistent; I can bowl a strike in one frame, scratch the next, and get seven pins in the one after that.

And my mother-in-law is the world's most patient grandma. Do NOT let this girl near your makeup table, ever!

I got a new camera for my birthday last week, and I played with it a bit over the weekend, as you can see. What have you done for fun lately?
